Timing belt material and structure

The timing belt has two main components, one is a rope molded inside it to carry torque load, and the other is a plastic compound used to form teeth and cover the rope itself. These two materials can be used for different types of belts. The final use of the belt is the main factor in deciding which material to use.

The rope is usually made of polyester, glass fiber or Kevlar and transmits the power in the drive system through the belt. It winds perpendicular to the belt teeth, thus transmitting the power applied to the belt in a linear manner. A common example of a belt carrying heavy loads is the serpentine belt used in automobile engines. The belt used in the smaller drive system, such as York products, will not be close to the load of the car engine. However, in both cases, the elongation (elongation) of the belt is very small. Especially in small transmission applications, because the cord material is very strong relative to the load it transmits, there is actually no belt tension. Too high a load will not normally cause the rope to break, but it will cause the belt tooth to jump or the "tooth groove" to cross the pulley tooth.

Inject the plastic into the mold that already contains the winding rope, and cut the precise tooth shape in the mold. Each different belt length requires different molds, because the exact number of teeth on the finished belt must also be in the mold to produce the finished continuous belt with no starting point or end point. The "sleeve" produced by the mold is usually 18 to 36 inches wide and has the required number of teeth. The special slitting tool is used to trim the sleeve to the required belt width very accurately. When FDA requirements must be met, polyurethane is usually used to produce belts for food processing. Polyurethane can also be colored or kept transparent or natural, which means it is unlikely to see any particles compared with black neoprene tape. Neoprene is usually the standard material of the timing belt because it has good wear characteristics and very accurately maintains the tooth shape of the mold.
