Primary or secondary fuel filter?
Recently, everyone seems to be asking me a question - primary fuel filter or secondary fuel filter?
The primary filter usually filters to 30 microns, while the secondary filter operates near the 2-5 micron mark.
The question you have to ask yourself is... In this case, do you want to filter the fine dust particles or the water in the system?
If you want to capture dust particles, you can use a secondary filter, but you also need to check the efficiency of the filter.
Nominal micron rating
This refers to the capacity of the filter when capturing particles with an efficiency of 50% to 90%. For example, the nominal rating at 10 microns is 50%, which means that the filter can capture 50% of 10 micron sized contaminants.
Keep in mind that when removing a given particle size, the efficiency of the nominal micron scale may be between 50-98.6%.

Absolute micron level
The term refers to the ability to remove at least 98.7% of particles of a specific size.
This rating is determined through a test in which fluid passes through a flat sheet of filter material. Particles that pass through are measured and counted. This rating is more informative than the nominal micron rating.
If you want to filter water, it's a little difficult. The ability of a filter to separate particles is different from its ability to separate water.
The main problem is that the emulsified water particles seem to be pushed through the filter.
The flow rate has a significant effect on the ability of the filter to capture and filter these particles. The primary filter has better filtering capacity than the secondary filter to filter this water.
On the other hand, the primary filter can block the emulsified water more. The problem is that when water is mixed or attached to diesel fuel, it becomes more difficult to capture.
In this case, it is better to install a main filter, and then let the factory filter filter anything that may pass through the main filter.
Most factory filters will filter anywhere between 7 and 2 microns, so they can well prevent any further contamination. The primary fuel filter has been used on trucks for many years, and the effect is very good.
The ultimate goal is to install a Directions Plus fuel filter and catch tank kit.
