Definition
Road roller, also known as soil roller, is a kind of road repair equipment. Road roller belongs to the category of road equipment in construction machinery, and is widely used for filling and compaction of large-scale engineering projects such as high-grade highways, railways, airport runways, dams, stadiums, etc. The roller can roll sand, semi-cohesive soil and cohesive soil, roadbed stabilized soil and asphalt concrete pavement layer. The roller is suitable for various compaction operations under the gravity of the machine itself, so as to permanently deform and compact the compacted layer. The roller is divided into steel wheel type and tire type.

The drum structure includes a smooth drum, a groove drum and a sheep-shoe drum. Leveling and rolling is the most widely used, mainly used for pavement compaction. It adopts mechanical or hydraulic transmission, can compact the protruding part intensively, and has high compaction flatness, which is suitable for asphalt pavement compaction.
Classification by axle
According to the axle, there are single-axle single-wheel, double-axle double-wheel, double-axle three-wheel and three-axle three-wheel. It is powered by internal combustion engine and adopts mechanical transmission or hydraulic transmission. Generally speaking, front wheel steering, good mobility, rear wheel drive. In order to improve steering and rolling performance, articulated steering structure and all-wheel drive should be adopted. The front wheel carrier and the frame are hinged to reduce the body swing caused by uneven road surface. The rear wheel is rigidly connected to the frame. Use hydraulic control and hydraulic cylinders to control the steering. The front and rear rollers are equipped with scrapers to remove adhesive from the rollers. It is also equipped with a water spray system, which is used to spray water on the roller to prevent adhesion of the asphalt mixture when compacting the asphalt pavement. In order to increase the force, iron, sand and water can also be added to the roller to increase the weight.
