What is an internal combustion engine?What are the categories?

internal combustion engine

Internal combustion engine is a kind of power machinery. It is a thermal engine that burns fuel inside the machine and directly converts the heat released into power. In a broad sense, internal combustion engines include not only reciprocating piston internal combustion engines, rotary piston engines and free piston engines, but also rotary impeller jet engines. However, the internal combustion engines generally refer to piston internal combustion engines. In the past, the piston internal combustion engine was the most popular type. The piston-type internal combustion engine mixes fuel with air and burns in its cylinder. The heat released makes the cylinder produce high-temperature and high-pressure gas. The gas expansion pushes the piston to work, and then outputs the mechanical work through the crank connecting rod mechanism or other mechanisms to drive the driven machinery to work. The common ones are diesel engines and gasoline engines. By converting internal energy into mechanical energy, internal energy is changed by doing work.

Classification

1.According to the fuel used, it is divided into gasoline engine, diesel engine, natural gas (CNG) engine, LPG engine, ethanol engine, etc., as well as dual fuel engine and flexible fuel engine.

2.According to the ignition mode in the cylinder, it can be divided into positive-ignition type and compression-ignition type.

3.According to the number of strokes: two-stroke and four-stroke.

4.According to piston movement mode, it is divided into reciprocating type and rotary type.

5.According to the cylinder cooling mode, it is divided into water-cooled type and air-cooled type.

6.According to the number of cylinders: single-cylinder engine, multi-cylinder engine.

7.According to the speed of internal combustion engine: low speed (<300 r/min), medium speed (300~1000 r/min), high speed (>1000 r/min);

8.According to the intake charge pressure: naturally aspirated, supercharged.

9.According to the arrangement of cylinders, internal combustion engines can be divided into in-line, diagonal, opposed, V-shaped and W-shaped.

There are many classification methods for internal combustion engines. According to different classification methods, internal combustion engines can be divided into different types.
